Corrado Introduces Bill Allowing Vaccinated Individuals to Unmask Indoors

New Legislation Is Consistent with Latest CDC Guidance, Would Supersede Gov. Murphy’s Executive Orders

Senator Kristin Corrado has introduced legislation that would supersede Governor Phil Murphy’s executive orders and allow vaccinated individuals to unmask indoors, in accordance with new federal guidance.

“The CDC has advised that vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks indoors as they are protected from the coronavirus and incapable of transmitting it to others,” said Corrado (R-40). “Since Governor Murphy is being completely irrational and refuses to lift restrictions that are unsupported by science, we’ve introduced a bill to clearly state that vaccinated people cannot be forced to wear a mask indoors.”

Last week, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said anyone who has been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 can stop wearing masks in most settings, including indoors, even when around unvaccinated people.

Corrado’ new legislation, S-3832, says no person can be required to wear a mask indoors if that person has received a COVID-19 vaccine, in accordance with the CDC guidance issued on May 13.

“The updated CDC guidance is based on scientific data proving that COVID-19 vaccines work and make it possible for vaccinated people to return to a normal life,” said Corrado. “By being stubborn in maintaining unnecessary mask mandates, however, Governor Murphy is sending the message that burdensome restrictions will continue in New Jersey even for those who choose to get vaccinated. I think that’s completely irresponsible and contrary to the public health interests of our state.”

According to the New York Times, New Jersey is the only state in the continental United States that continues to maintain unnecessary mask restrictions for those who are vaccinated or has not announced a timeframe to conform with the CDC’s updated guidance.

When asked at a recent press briefing why New Jersey was going it alone on maintaining mask restrictions for vaccinated people, Murphy responded, “on this one we feel quite strongly.”

“The science doesn’t change state by state, regardless of Governor Murphy’s feelings,” said Corrado. “If it’s safe for a vaccinated person to enter a store or office unmasked in New York or Pennsylvania, it’s safe in New Jersey too. At this point, the governor just looks silly.”
