Corrado Measure to Assist Individuals on Autism Spectrum During Traffic Stops Advances

Senator Kristin Corrado’s legislation to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder to avoid unnecessary confusion with law enforcement during traffic stops has been advanced by the Senate Transportation Committee.

“When pulled over for a routine traffic stop, we want to ensure that both the driver and police officer have a positive and constructive interaction,” said Corrado (R-40). “This blue envelope is a simple way that adults on the spectrum could safely disclose their autism to law enforcement. This can prevent unnecessary confusion and deescalate stressful encounters while ensuring the safety and security of all involved.”

Corrado’s bipartisan measure, S-849, would require the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) to issue blue envelopes that hold documents required to operate a motor vehicle to persons diagnosed with autism.

Corrado noted the idea for this legislation was inspired by her constituents.

“The passionate and proactive members of the Passaic County Parents of Adults with Disabilities (PACOPAD) inspired me to sponsor this legislation,” added Corrado. “These parents want peace of mind to know that their children are safe on the road. The blue envelopes will improve conversations and connections between law enforcement and the communities they serve.”
