Democrat Newark Hispanic Leader Endorses Hugin
MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — Bob Hugin’s campaign for U.S. Senate continued to generate widespread, bipartisan support today as he received the endorsement of Democrat Nelson “Butchie” Nieves, a leader in Newark’s Puerto Rican community and former council candidate for the City of Newark.
“Bob Hugin is offering us a fresh opportunity to get things done in Washington, where career politicians like Bob Menendez have ignored the needs of the public and rendered government ineffective through their self-interest and partisan bickering. Government is broken, and the only way to fix it is to elect people willing to reach across party aisles to find bipartisan solutions. We need change. We need Bob Hugin in the U.S. Senate,” said Nieves.
Nieves announced his endorsement this morning on the Eric Dawson Talk Radio Show, 95.1 FM, where he co-hosted and interviewed Bob Hugin about the campaign.
“The overwhelming support I am receiving from community leaders such as Butchie Nieves is encouraging, and I am honored by his endorsement. When I become Senator, I will not be beholden to special interests and donors like Bob Menendez. I will go to Washington to represent all New Jerseyans and work with everyone, no matter what party, to reform healthcare, reduce taxes, and ensure New Jersey gets our fair share for the huge amount of taxes we send to Washington every year,” said Bob Hugin.
Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico in 1957, Nieves and his family moved seven days later to Newark, where he has lived ever since. Nieves has been a community advocate, an entrepreneur and club owner, and he has been actively involved with the Puerto Rican Day Parade in the City, serving as president for three years as well as vice-President and advisor. Nieves has been active in city politics, worked for the Newark Housing Authority from 1993 through 2004, served as a Newark Public School Advisory Board Member from 2001 through 2004 and was employed by the city council from 2005 through 2016.
