Downey on Bill Requiring Automobile Insurers to Disclose Policy Limits Under Certain Circumstances Advanced by Committee

Legislation to Allow for Pre-Litigation Request of Documentation by Attorneys

(TRENTON) – The Assembly Appropriations Committee advanced a bill (A-4028) on Thursday that would require automobile insurers to disclose policy limits, upon request, to attorneys representing individuals injured or killed in motor vehicle accidents prior to the start of civil litigation proceedings.

The bill sponsor Assemblywoman Joann Downey (D-Monmouth) released the following statement:

“Victims and the attorneys representing them should not have to operate in the dark. In creating upfront access to policy information, this legislation would prove valuable in helping victims conduct productive settlement negotiations and where possible keep cases from going to court.”
