Garden State Equality Condemns NJ Mayor’s Bigoted Sermon Calling LGBTQ Youth “Confused”
Today, NJ.com released a story detailing Alloway Township Mayor Ed McKelvey’s anti-LGBTQ remarks regarding LGBTQ-inclusivity in New Jersey’s public schools during a religious sermon. Garden State Equality unequivocally condemns his bigoted comments.
The following statement may be attributed to Garden State Equality executive director Christian Fuscarino:
“In spite of Alloway Township Mayor’s comments, New Jersey has the number one rated public schools in the nation. Because of the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights, Transgender Student Guidance, and LGBTQ-Inclusive Curriculum, queer youth in New Jersey have critical protections and representation in our classrooms where they can learn in a safe and affirming environment. Fortunately, in his capacity as mayor, he has no say or jurisdiction over the education of our youth in Alloway Township, and we’re glad that Superintendent Kristin Schell has reaffirmed her unequivocal support to provide an inclusive school environment for LGBTQ youth that’s free of bigotry and hate.”
