Statewide Democrats Highlight Congressman’s Progressive Record, Commitment to Working Families

WEST NEW YORK, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and U.S. Senator Cory Booker are endorsing Rep. Albio Sires (D-Hudson) for re-election to continue representing the people of the 8th Congressional District. New Jersey’s four statewide Democratic elected officials join dozens of prominent labor unions and progressive advocacy groups in supporting Rep. Sires, along with Democrats from throughout his district who have seen his leadership up close throughout his career in public service.

“Albio Sires is among the most dedicated public servants I have ever met and his record of supporting progressive policy solutions and fighting for working families is unparalleled,” said Governor Murphy. “From leading in our fight for federal funding for essential transportation infrastructure, to advocating for a higher federal minimum wage to standing up for affordable health care access, Congressman Sires is consistently on the right side of the issues that matter most to our state and I’m proud to support him.”

“As a fellow former leader of the State Assembly, I have always known Albio Sires to be a consummate public servant and someone who cares deeply about the people he represents,” said Lt. Governor Oliver, who served with Rep. Sires in the State Assembly from 2004 to 2006. “I’m honored to add my voice in support of Albio Sires and I urge all Democrats in the 8th Congressional District to join me in standing with him.”

“From his days as a Mayor working to build more affordable housing, to his time as a state legislative leader fighting for more public education funding, to his time in Congress leading on economic justice issues, Albio Sires has always been someone working families can count on,” said Senator Menendez. “I’m honored to call him a friend and a colleague and he has my unequivocal support to continue working for the people of Hudson, Essex, Union and Bergen counties.”

“Albio Sires has once again proven his commitment to the people of New Jersey by being an indispensable part of our delegation’s continued fight to bring more federal resources to our state, cities, hospitals, small businesses and families impacted by this public health crisis,” said Senator Booker. “We need Albio Sires working alongside us in Washington to deliver on the promise of standing up for working families and the middle class, and I support him wholeheartedly.”

“It’s an honor to earn the support of New Jersey’s leading Democrats who have seen my record of standing up for our values and delivering for the people I represent up close,” said Rep. Sires. “This is a time of unprecedented turmoil and pain in our country, but it’s also a moment when Democrats are poised to stand united in rejecting the failed Trump administration and returning honesty, compassion and competence to the White House. I stand ready to continue that fight through November and to work alongside Governor Murphy, Lt. Governor Oliver, Senator Menendez and Senator Booker to continue fighting for New Jersey.”
