Groundbreaking Latina Mayor Wilda Diaz Endorses Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina for U.S. Senate

“Patricia is most qualified to represent New Jersey and be a national leader on issues that matter to NJ’s major cities and the Latino community”

Califon, N.J.—Today, U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina announced that history-making former Mayor of Perth Amboy Wilda Diaz endorsed her campaign for Senate. Mayor Diaz was New Jersey’s first Puerto Rican and Latina mayor and served one of the state’s most diverse cities for over a decade. She also served as the former Chairwoman and President of the NJ Urban Mayors Association and made history by focusing on economic development investment and public debt reduction which made Perth Amboy a model of urban redevelopment during her 12 years as Mayor.

“Patricia is most qualified to represent New Jersey and be a national leader on issues that matter to New Jersey’s major cities and the Latino community,” said Mayor Diaz. “As Mayor, I always relied on her expertise on how to spur economic growth for urban centers and create good jobs and opportunities for women and people of color. Just like she’s a history-making candidate, she would be a history-making Senator; not just as the first Latina to represent us in the Senate, but because she would be a working class, grassroots Senator for all New Jerseyans.

“I am so grateful for Mayor Diaz’s endorsement. She has led by example transforming a city like Perth Amboy into an example of urban renewal. I am proud to have supported her efforts during the 12 years that she served as mayor and I am proud she is supporting me now in this campaign. She led with distinction and vision promoting economic redevelopment while reducing the city’s debt and she is an inspiration to the next generation of Latina leaders” said Dr. Campos-Medina. “Together, we will continue to build a campaign for all New Jerseyans, so that our urban communities have a voice in the Senate that understands their needs. New Jersey voters deserve a fighter for the bread and butter economic issues so important to working families.”

Campos-Medina has made her record as an advocate for working people and Latina women representation central to her campaign. She recently announced her support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, tying her call for peace to her harrowing experience living through civil war in El Salvador as a child. In a video announcing her campaign, Campos-Medina shares her inspiring journey as a Latina immigrant woman and as someone who intimately understands how issues like the economy and jobs, war, immigration policy and economic community investment impact the daily lives of countless New Jerseyans and their loved ones.
