Jersey City’s First annual Public Safety Appreciation Day will Honor over 2,000 First Responders and Public Safety employees

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop will host the first annual Public Safety Appreciation Day Saturday, June 22nd from noon to 4 p.m. to honor the over 2,000 men and women who keep our neighborhoods safe on a daily basis.  We are welcoming the public to join us for a day of family fun as we pay a special tribute to the Jersey City parking authority, police officers, firefighters, 911 dispatchers, and crossing guards.

“It’s important we take the time to thank the brave men and women who keep Jersey City safe on a daily basis,” Mayor Fulop said.  “This is just one simple way we as a community can say thank you, thank you for all that you do.”

The day of recognition is filled with various entertainment including a BBQ, music, giveaways, obstacle courses, a scavenger hunt, face painting, balloon animals, and sports activities for Jersey City’s first responders and public safety members as well as the public who attends to show their appreciation.

“Today we are showing our appreciation to everyone, from those who just joined our team and have their careers ahead of them to others who have served this city for decades,” said Public Safety Director James Shea.  “When people meet a first responder, oftentimes it’s during a crisis or unfortunate circumstance.  Today is meant to be a positive experience for residents to get to know the people who are willing to put themselves in danger to keep us safe.”

Members of parking enforcement, police, fire, dispatchers and crossing guards will be on hand partaking in the festivities, which will kick off at noon with a JCPD vs. JCFD softball battle of the badges.  The 2nd annual summer community relations program #CHAT4Change will launch its 6-week contest with a scavenger hunt at 2 p.m.

Over the last two months, Jersey City residents voted online to choose a standout employee in each department.  Those results will be tallied, and employees nominated from each department will be recognized for their outstanding service to the community during an awards ceremony at 1 p.m.

“It’s all about having some fun and sharing a great day with the community.  The sun is shining today, but we have to remember these are the people who are out there rain, snow, whatever the day may bring.  They are out there keeping us safe,” said JCPD Chief Michael Kelly.

“Every aspect of the Public Safety Department is part of a combined effort to keep the residents and visitors of Jersey City safe,” said JCFD Chief Steven McGill.  “I’m proud of the men and women on the Fire Department and all of Public Safety for their hard work and dedication.”
