Johnson Grateful to County Committee for Historic Senate Run

Bergen County, NJ – In light of overwhelming support, Assemblyman Gordon M. Johnson issued the following statement after his challenger dropped out of the Democratic Committee of Bergen County’s convention, making Johnson the uncontested Democratic candidate for State Senate in Legislative District 37:

“Committee members are the very heart of our Democratic Party. District 37 has over 300 elected committee members and since Senator Weinberg’s announced her retirement, I have been campaigning hard for their votes. The support I have received has been humbling, overwhelming and invigorating.

“The committee process in Bergen County is not rigged, it’s not predetermined, it’s an election. It’s democracy in action. The members of the county committee are dedicated men and women who know our needs better than anyone and work hard to make our community better every day of the year. They are our elected officials, our advocates, our volunteers and our organizers in District 37. They were the ones that sent Senator Weinberg to Trenton for over 20 years and they are the ones who have given me this historic opportunity to be the first Black State Senator from Bergen County. I do not take their trust in me lightly.

“The democratic priorities we all share – affordable housing, environmental protections, equality, inclusivity and justice for all – could not be accomplished without them.”
