Jones Applauds Governor on Grants Advancing Computer Science Initiatives Across the State

Assemblywoman is Author, Sponsor of Two Laws Encouraging Students to Learn Computer Science in School

            (TRENTON) – A longtime advocate of STEM education, Assemblywoman Patricia Egan Jones (D-Camden, Gloucester) issued the following statement applauding recent actions taken by the Governor to ensure more students are taught computer science in New Jersey schools:

            “This is the first time the state has specifically awarded grants to fund computer science education in our schools. I sponsored two bills, which were signed into law over the last year, requiring it to be taught to high school students and certifying instructors to teach it.

           “I applaud Governor Murphy on his efforts to prepare the next generation for a tougher, more demanding future workforce and helping to make sure our students succeed in any endeavor they choose. Computer science education can open the doors to career opportunities they have yet to imagine.”

            Assemblywoman Jones is the sponsor of A-2193 which directs the State Board of Education to authorize computer science education endorsement to instructional certificate. It was signed into law last August. Another bill, signed into law January 2018, required each public high school to offer a course in computer science.
