Kyrillos: Time is Now to Legalize Sports Betting in NJ

Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) released the following statement Monday as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments to legalize sports betting in New Jersey:

“This is an incredibly important case for our state,” Senator Kyrillos said. “The time is now to legalize sports betting and give New Jersey the economic boost we sorely need. I am hopeful that the Supreme Court will rule in our favor and we will await their decision.”

On Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, the U.S. Supreme Court began hearing the appeal of a court decision that blocked New Jersey’s efforts to bring sports betting to its casinos and race tracks, including Monmouth Park. Currently, only Nevada, Montana, and Oregon offer legal sports betting.

Senator Kyrillos is a prime sponsor of legislation repealing prohibitions on sports wagering at racetracks and casinos, and a staunch advocate for New Jersey’s equine industry.

“Legalizing sports betting will create countless jobs, revitalize our equine industry, and even help out the tourist destinations surrounding our struggling race tracks. It’s a win on every level,” Senator Kyrillos said. “This has been a long battle, but one that is well worth the continued effort.”
