Lance Statement on Trump-Kim Summit

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) released the following statement on the bilateral meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un:

“The complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a top national security priority of the United States.  Today I am cautiously optimistic we are one step closer to this significant accomplishment.

“I commend President Trump for this strategy and I am pleased the congressionally-mandated sanctions will remain in place until we can verify steps the Kim Regime is taking to denuclearize.  Strict sanctions brought the Kim Regime to the bargaining table – those sanctions must continue.

“If Kim Jong Un wants to trade his nuclear capabilities for access to the world economy, an end to the Korean War and other improvements in international affairs, then that is in the best interest of the United States.

“Peace and security must be the objective of our government.”

Lance is a cosponsor of the North Korea Nuclear Baseline Act, legislation providing aggressive congressional oversight to ensure North Korea is upholding denuclearization commitments.
