Letter to the Editor about America's 250th birthday

Christine Giordano Hanlon, Monmouth County Clerk & Thomas A. Arnone, Monmouth County Commissioner Director, Co-Chairs of the MonmouthNJ 250 Committee

It was a time filled with parades, concerts and community gatherings adorned in red, white and blue. Americans old enough to remember celebrating the 200th birthday of our great country will recall 1976 as a special year marked by festive and exciting celebrations—but the Bicentennial was so much more than that. It was an era that reminded us of the importance of our nation’s rich history of sacrifice and resilience that inspired a new level of patriotism across the country.

As America now approaches her next milestone birthday on July 4, 2026, our nation is preparing for our “Semiquincentennial” celebration marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We are especially excited for this monumental event here in Monmouth County, where George Washington himself fought a major battle during the American Revolution. To ensure a fitting tribute, the MonmouthNJ 250 Committee was established by the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners to coordinate Monmouth County’s official observances and celebrations for America’s 250th birthday.

The focus of this initiative is not limited to county-sponsored events and activities, but also a call for full participation among our 53 municipalities. As Co-Chairs of the MonmouthNJ 250 Committee, we have delivered presentations at town council meetings throughout the County to galvanize and educate our mayors, local officials and community members about how all can join this grand celebration.

With less than one year until America’s 250th birthday, we encourage you to find out about the exciting programs and events already launched and learn about what is planned for the coming year across Monmouth County! For details, please visit MonmouthNJ250.org, and be sure to follow MonmouthNJ250 on social media. We look forward to celebrating America’s 250th birthday with you!
