Make the Road New Jersey Responds to Congress Passing COVID-19 Relief Package
Crucial relief coming from Washington, but millions remain excluded; New Jersey must create a pandemic relief fund for workers and families left behind from aid
New Jersey (March 10, 2021) — In response to Congress passing the first COVID-19 relief package this year, Make the Road New Jersey, the membership based organization released the following statement:
“The American Rescue Plan provides critical, life-sustaining relief and will help lift millions of families out of poverty and put our country on a pathway to recovery. However, the law still leaves 9.3 million undocumented immigrants behind – including nearly a half million New Jersey residents. They will not receive stimulus payments or unemployment, and have now spent a year without access to any aid. Immigrants, returning citizens and others that work off the books are struggling to survive. We cannot recover as a state or as a nation if so many families are left without a penny in aid. New Jersey must take action immediately to fund relief for immigrant families and workers excluded from aid, including a $600 week payment for excluded workers that are unemployed but ineligible for unemployment insurance and stimulus like payments for families left behind from aid.”
