Make the Road New Jersey Responds to the Trump Administration’s Unconstitutional Memorandum to Exclude Undocumented Immigrants from Congressional Apportionment Counts

(New Jersey, July 21, 2020) – On Tuesday, July 21, the Trump administration issued a memorandum attempting to bar the count of undocumented immigrants from congressional apportionment affecting the representation of black and brown communities throughout the nation. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to reject the Trump Administration’s attempt to include the Citizenship question in the Census. On behalf of the members of immigrant rights organization, Make the Road New Jersey, Rosa Lopez issued the following statement:

“Any attempt to ban people from being counted in the 2020 Census is unconstitutional. Last year, our communities fought and won against Trump’s attempt to include the Citizenship question in the Census. Today is another attempt to confuse, discourage, and erase immigrant communities.

We will continue to work for a complete count in New Jersey. Everyone living in the United States must be counted in the Census, and everyone should be counted, no matter where you were born. Our communities have shown we are here to stay, and we will be counted.”
