Mayor Steven M. Fulop Discusses 2020 Census, Aiming to Ensure Accurate Count of All Jersey City Residents and Highlighting Federal, State, and Local Impacts of Results

What:             Mayor Steven M. Fulop will discuss the 2020 U.S. Census, alongside the director of Jersey City’s Housing, Economic Development and Commerce and representatives of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the U.S. Census Bureau. The U.S. Constitution mandates that every resident be counted every 10 years. The count aids the federal government in determining how to distribute more than $675 billion in federal funds and also determines each state’s number of congressional seats. The city will have a targeted outreach and education campaign so that residents understand the importance of being counted in the 2020 Census, as the data collected will impact the city for the next ten years.

In an effort to ensure all of the residents in Jersey City are counted, Mayor Fulop has added his signature to The United States Conference of Mayors letter to Wilber Ross asking that the citizenship question be removed from the Census.
