Mayor Tony Vauss Launches “Operation Smooth Streets” to Repair Irvington’s Potholes After Harsh Winter

Township mobilizes Irvington DPW and 4 contracted companies in aggressive push to repair hundreds of potholes across the community

IRVINGTON, NJ — After a punishing winter of repeated snowstorms, freezing temperatures, and road damage across Irvington, Mayor Tony Vauss is moving aggressively to tackle the township’s pothole problem with the launch of Operation Smooth Streets, a large-scale repair campaign aimed at restoring safer, smoother streets for residents throughout the community.

The Irvington Department of Public Works began the campaign on March 23, 2026, targeting hundreds of potholes that developed following the season’s severe weather. To speed up repairs and strengthen the township’s response, Mayor Vauss has authorized 4 separate companies to join the effort alongside Irvington DPW crews.

Mayor Vauss said the initiative is about more than fixing roads — it is about responding directly to the needs of the people of Irvington.

“I love this community, and I care deeply about the people who live here,” said Mayor Tony Vauss. “When our streets are damaged, our residents feel it every single day. That is why we are moving quickly and aggressively to repair potholes throughout Irvington and make sure our neighborhoods get the attention they deserve.”

Crews are authorized to perform repairs primarily during daytime hours, generally between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. As the work moves through the township, residents and motorists should expect temporary lane closures, brief traffic delays, and short-term inconvenience in repair zones.

Township officials say the effort is designed to deliver long-term benefits for drivers, families, and neighborhoods across Irvington.

“This is a major quality-of-life initiative,” the administration said. “We know residents have been dealing with the wear and tear caused by this winter, and we want the community to know that we are not waiting — we are acting.”

Potholes typically worsen after heavy winter conditions because repeated freezing and thawing cause pavement to crack, weaken, and break apart. This year’s multiple snowstorms and severe cold made the problem worse, requiring an expanded and more urgent response.

As crews move block by block through Irvington, residents are being encouraged to help the township identify any potholes that may still need attention.
