Take Up the Sacred Fight Against Trump's Attack on Voting Rights

As he tries to crunch a magnificent country down into the size of one of his vulgar golf courses, President Donald Trump - nosediving on every front - wants to deny people the precious right to vote in the coming midterm elections.
The President's so-called Save America Act, which seeks to accomplish the opposite of what it purports, continues his slog of taking this country back to the days prior to the precious Voting Rights Act of 1965, which our parents and grandparents marched for and gave their blood for in their defense of our nation and the furtherance of American justice.
Trump has deeply damaged this nation with his unconstitutional and illegal war, his grotesquely vapid destruction of the Obama Doctrine, which restored critical alliances worldwide, including NATO, and his militarization of our streets behind the hate and horror of his every utterance.
People know it. People feel it. Those who backed him before now pay a terrible penitential price as the greatest of all nations in human history seeks to dig out of the wreckage of this bigoted, totalitarian presidency. The killings by poorly trained Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers of two Americans - Renee Good and Alex Pretti - painfully keyed many Americans into the depth of this crisis. U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) yesterday in Newark correctly identified ICE as an agency in its current form rejected by Americans. Pick your crisis with Trump.
But as Democrats try to rein in the President's secret police force, forged when he pardoned 1,500 U.S. Capitol-desecrating goons and pumped up the ICE budget, Trump dangles his Save America Act as the only way he will make a political trade. True to form, Trump's proposed solution this week to the madness he caused is to implement wholly regressive and repressive measures aimed at impairing the American right to vote. If his Orwellian Save America Act doesn't pass, he'll do to polling places what he did to our streets and our airports: he will install intimidating armed personnel at polling places "to help secure Americans' right to vote."
"It clearly harkens back to voter suppression measures in the south, it's that exact same playbook," Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter told InsiderNJ. "What you do is you restrict permissible voter IDs."
You require pieces of ID beyond the completely advisable and adequate form of ID now used: drivers licenses, which clearly mark individuals who are not citizens and therefore rightly unable to vote. Trump's Save America Act also disallows mail-in voting, which makes it difficult for people who don't drive or have two or three jobs - like most people out here, candidly.
Trump wants U.S. citizens to have to provide a passport at the polls or a birth certificate.
"We've never had passport requirement in the U.S.," said Peter. "It reminds me of the time I lived in Russia, where they implemented the Soviet practice of having to carry passports at all times. That scares the hell out of me. It's the 'show me your papers' mentality that is not American."
In addition, the Save America Act would complicate the voting lives of women who have changed their names, and whose passports or birth certificates do not match their current appellation. U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AL) testified extensively to the act's blatant and catastrophic breach of justice across all fronts.
The act simply makes it harder to vote, which disproportionately - and calculatedly - hits disadvantaged communities, and in case you need help, again, with or without the act - the desperately tanking Trump will have his masked secret police force at hand with their guns.
Reject Trump's version of ICE. And reject his shrill, whining and oppressive attempts to once again, as usual, escape accountability. Ensure American elections this coming November by refusing to allow the Save America Act to proceed.
If you don't believe me, listen to U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12) - pictured, top, last year - our honorable congresswoman who is retiring at the end of this year, but not without continuing to fight this scourge.
“The SAVE Act is nothing more than a blatant attempt to put up roadblocks to prevent millions of working-class Americans from exercising their God-given right to vote,” said Watson Coleman. "The bill would make it more difficult to register to vote by eliminating a driver’s license, state-issued ID, or military ID as valid forms of ID to prove eligibility. In addition, individuals whose last names have changed since their birth certificate was issued, including 70 million women, would not be able to use their birth certificate to prove citizenship.
“Republican Politicians know their agenda is unpopular with the majority of Americans,” added the Congresswoman. “Instead of adjusting their priorities or engaging in the democratic process of persuading voters, they’ve decided to eliminate voters who are less likely to vote for them."
