Mayoral Candidate Jesal Amin Thanks Dr.-Mayor Cohen on Property Taxes for Dummies Lesson
For Immediate Release
East Brunswick, NJ- East Brunswick Mayoral candidate Jesal Amin issued the following statement on Mayor Cohen’s mismanagement of East Brunswick’s finances and history of raising property taxes.
“East Brunswick is a great place to live and raise and a family, but unfortunately many who wish to call East Brunswick home cannot afford to do so. Property taxes were high enough already, but under Mayor Cohen they went up 7%* on top of the 106% increase on the water and sewer tax. Mayor Cohen can blame the school district or deflect all he wants on this issue, but the fact is those are two areas he directly controls; and they both went up, costing East Brunswick taxpayers while providing even less in return.” Stated Amin. “Mayor Cohen has been the anomaly among recent Mayors. Previous Republican and Democratic Mayors kept their fiscal house in order and even ran a surplus, while Mayor Cohen keeps raising taxes and compounding on the deficit. When Mayor Cohen took over, the Water and Sewer Utility was operating with a surplus and had plans to replace the lines and repave the roads. Under Dr.-Mayor Cohen’s leadership, these capital improvement plans have been delayed, the Water and Sewer Utility operates with a deficit and the potholes are not fixed.”
“As Mayor I will set East Brunswick on a path towards fiscal responsibility and hold the line on property taxes. As a community, Republicans, Democrats, and unaffiliated voters must come together and elect leaders who will not tax or spend us into oblivion and can make the tough cuts when necessary. As a businessman with real world experience, I believe I am best suited for this challenge.” Continued Amin. “I will renegotiate contracts providing savings to our taxpayers, get re-development off the ground after 4 years of being stalled, attract businesses instead of lawsuits to save our town money on legal fees and increase our tax base, maintain our blue ribbon schools of excellence and work to maintain foreclosed properties to increase property values to boost tax revenues.”
