Mazzeo Statement on Bill to Create Commission to Study Property Tax Assessment
Legislation Cleared by Assembly Panel
(TRENTON) – Aiming to find ways to improve real property tax assessment in New Jersey, Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo released the following statement on his bill (A-4826) to establish a commission to examine the State’s current assessment practices and make recommendations, which was recently approved by the Assembly State and Local Government Committee:
“Our current property tax assessment process is costly and burdensome,” said Mazzeo (D-Atlantic). “The Property Tax Assessment Study Commission will aim to find ways we can improve this process, including taking a look at Gloucester County’s pilot program which shifted property assessment to a county-based system. This program reportedly saved the county over $2 million a year in assessment costs and increased overall efficiency. These are promising results that could help us develop a more effective process. It’s time for us to identify what’s working and what’s not, and move to develop new practices.”
