MENENDEZ, MUKHERJI, McGREEVEY HONOR THE FAMILIES OF VENUS XTRAVAGANZA WITH HISTORIC RECOGNITION

While Trump Administration rolls back LGBTQ+ rights nationwide, Jersey City leaders make historic investments in New Jersey for trans lives, visibility, and ensuring legacy is not erased

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Jersey City leaders and LGBTQ+ advocates came together over the weekend to honor the Pellagatti family and the House of Xtravaganza, the chosen and biological families of Venus Xtravaganza, a trailblazing trans woman and cultural icon who rose to prominence in New York’s ballroom scene and remains a symbol of courage, resilience, and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community.

Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, Congressman Rob Menendez, and State Senator Raj Mukherji joined Hudson Pride and Garden State Equality on the rooftop of Six26 during Jersey City Pride to celebrate Venus’ enduring legacy and the families who continue to keep her memory alive.

The recognition comes as Senator Mukherji successfully secured a $400,000 line item in this year’s state budget to support trans-led housing and health initiatives, bringing the total funding to $800,000 in just two years — marking the largest dedicated state investment in New Jersey history for the trans community.

“Venus’ story is one of bravery and brilliance, but also of injustice that we must never forget,” said Congressman Rob Menendez. “By honoring her family here in Jersey City, we celebrate the legacy of a daughter of this community whose life continues to inspire. And by investing in trans-led services, we’re making sure future generations have the safety, dignity, and opportunity that Venus was denied.”

Senator Raj Mukherji added: “Securing this historic investment for the trans community is not just about dollars, it’s about recognizing lives, legacies, and futures. Honoring Venus’ chosen and biological families here today affirms that Jersey City is, and always will be, a place where trans voices and histories are uplifted.”

Governor Jim McGreevey reflected on the city’s leadership: “Jersey City has long been a home for those who dream of a more inclusive and compassionate world. Honoring Venus Xtravaganza and the families who loved her reminds us of our responsibility to ensure every young person has the freedom to live their truth safely and with pride.”

“Now more than ever, we need leaders who believe in the full liberation of trans people — not just to survive, but to truly thrive. This historic recognition could not be more timely, said Jonovia Chase of Venus House. We are proud to witness true justice for Venus Xtravaganza taking shape — not only in remembrance, but in action. Her legacy is being honored by investing in the lives of women and individuals of trans experience living in New Jersey today.”

Christian Fuscarino, Executive Director of Garden State Equality, emphasized the importance of community recognition: “For too long, trans stories have been erased from our history books. Venus’ story is Jersey City’s story—a reminder of both the struggles and the brilliance of our LGBTQ+ family. Today’s recognition, paired with this historic investment thanks to Senator Mukherji’s leadership, is proof that New Jersey is moving forward in honoring and protecting our trans community.”

Liz Schedl, Executive Director of Hudson Pride, added: “Hudson Pride is honored to stand with Senator Raj Mukherji and Governor Jim McGreevey in recognizing the Pellagatti and Xtravaganza families. Venus’ life and legacy continue to inspire generations of LGBTQ+ people in Jersey City and beyond. By uplifting her family and chosen family today, we affirm the resilience, brilliance, and enduring impact of trans women who have always been at the heart of our movement.”

The celebration highlights both Venus’ place in Jersey City’s cultural fabric and the ongoing commitment of New Jersey leaders to build a safer, more equitable future for trans and LGBTQ+ residents across the state.
