Menendez Opens New Office in Jersey City

First time in generations a U.S. Senate office has been located in Hudson County, increasing access for NJ constituents

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez officially opened his new office today at Harborside in Jersey City, relocating his main state office from Newark.  It also marks the first time in at least a half-century that a U.S. Senate office has been located in Hudson County, according to available public records.

“I’ll miss working in Newark, which I’ve had the privilege of representing for the last three decades, but with my friend, Senator Cory Booker, still having his office there and me moving to Jersey City, we’re going to give more New Jerseyans access to a U.S. Senate office than ever before.  Jersey City is a dynamic place, growing dramatically, a microcosm of our nation where different cultures come together and blend; it makes New Jersey so unique,” Sen. Menendez said in a video message to constituents posted on social media.  “Working every day in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty is going to remind me of the promise of this nation—that everyone is welcome, everyone is equal, and in this place, everything is possible.”

The move represents a homecoming for Sen. Menendez, who was raised in Hudson County, attended Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, and is a former Union City mayor and school board member.  He later represented the county in the New Jersey General Assembly and State Senate, and was elected to Congress in 1992, serving a district that included parts of Hudson, Essex, Union and Middlesex Counties, including the Ironbound in Newark.

Ultimately, the decision to move his main office came down to ensuring greater access to more constituents seeking assistance from their U.S. senators.  Since being appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2006, Sen. Menendez had occupied the same office space in Newark’s Gateway Center as his predecessors, Sens. Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg.  Sen. Booker’s office is located in the same building.

Once a gateway for millions of immigrants making their way through nearby Ellis Island, Jersey City and Hudson County continue to be among the nation’s most diverse and densely populated areas.  The region’s diversifying economy, access to mass transit and proximity to New York City have led to steady population growth, according to the U.S. Census, with Jersey City on pace to soon become New Jersey’s largest city.
