Murphy Blasts Christie-Guadagno Abstention on Vote to Ban Fracking in Delaware River Watershed
Newark — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy called New Jersey’s abstention in today’s vote by the Delaware River Basin Commission to move forward with rules to permanently ban fracking within the region that provides water for 15 million residents in four states another example of failed environmental leadership by Governor Christie and Lieutenant Governor Guadagno.
In a 3-1 vote earlier today, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York supported the ban. The federal government’s representative voted no.
As the rule promulgation period is expected to take several months, it would be up to the next governor to vote on final adoption — Murphy committed to New Jersey voting “yes” at that time.
“When 15 million people needed their leaders to stand up as one to protect clean water, Chris Christie and Kim Guadagno sat silent while our neighboring states showed real leadership,” said Murphy. “New Jersey may not have any fracking, but our connection to the Delaware River would force us to live with the environmental harm it causes. When I am governor, New Jersey will proudly vote for the final rule to implement this ban.”
In June, Murphy sent a letter to the commission advocating for the permanent ban of fracking within the Delaware River Watershed.
