NARAL Pro-Choice America Congratulates New Jersey Candidates on Primary Victories

In a victory for New Jersey women’s reproductive rights, NARAL Pro-Choice America congratulated four endorsed, pro-choice New Jersey candidates for winning their primaries – Andy Kim in New Jersey’s Third Congressional District, Tom Malinowski in New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey’s Eleventh Congressional District.

“With near constant attacks on our basic reproductive freedom at the hands of the Trump Administration and the GOP, we need pro-choice champions in Congress who will always stand up for the rights of New Jersey women and families,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America Political Director Nicole Brener-Schmitz. “These candidates have been consistent advocates for our constitutional right to make our own healthcare decisions and we are proud to support them and ensure that they win on November 6th.”

Andy Kim is a native of New Jersey’s 3rd District, and has a deep understanding of the importance of women’s rights and reproductive freedom to this district. Kim is committed expanding access to quality healthcare, and to ensuring the Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) is permanently funded so that children and pregnant women can get the healthcare they need, and the program is no longer a political football.

Tom Malinowski served on President Clinton’s National Security Council, worked for Human Rights Watch, and served as Assistant Secretary of State under President Obama where he fought to defend the human rights of women and LGBTQ families. During his time at Human Rights Watch and the State Department, Malinowski consistently advocated for women’s rights, from insisting women be included in the peace process in Afghanistan to opposing gender discrimination in Saudi Arabia. He was also one of the leading advocates for funding women-led organizations in Syria that stood up to extremists.

Mikie Sherrill has spent 10 years fighting for American families while on active duty in the United States Navy. She also served communities across New Jersey while working as Outreach and Reentry Coordinator for the U.S. Attorney’s office in New Jersey, where she prioritized education and employment in communities high in crime. Sherrill is a vocal advocate for women’s health.
