New Jersey Coast Guardsman to Attend State of the Union as Guest of Congressman Kim

WASHINGTON, DC – Petty Officer Eric Thornton, a certified Surfman and resident of Manahawkin, New Jersey, will attend the State of the Union as the guest of Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03).

“It’s an incredible honor to have Petty Officer Thornton as the guest of the people of New Jersey’s Third District at the State of the Union,” said Congressman Kim. “Petty Officer Thornton represents thousands across our district who have dedicated their lives to serving their country. As we take time this week to reflect on the state of our union, it’s important that we rededicate ourselves to serving those who put their lives on the line to keep our country safe.”

Petty Officer Thornton, who enlisted in the Coast Guard in July of 2011, achieved the qualification of Surfman, earning a level of elite expertise attained by only approximately 500 other Coast Guardsman in the service’s history.

In June 2018, Petty Officer Thornton gained notoriety by leading a rescue of a man attempting a transatlantic voyage during difficult conditions.

“Petty Office Thornton represents the best of our district,” said Congressman Kim. “From those like him currently serving at the Joint Base and in facilities across our district, to retired veterans who gave their careers to service, I will always fight for our men and women who have worn the uniform.”
