NJDOL Seeks Applicants for Apprenticeship Policy Position
As Part of the Governor’s Fellows Program
TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) is accepting applications for a Governor’s Fellow position under its Office of Apprenticeship headquartered in Trenton. This role is part of Governor Murphy’s recently relaunched Governor’s Fellows Program.
Under NJDOL’s Division of Workforce Development, the Governor’s Fellow will support the Office of Apprenticeship in strengthening the earn-while-you-learn model throughout the state to drive economic development and increase opportunity for both youth and adults to attain skills and training leading to gainful careers. The Office serves as the primary contact and technical resource for employers, educational institutions, trade associations, and current and prospective apprentices for Governor Murphy’s New Jersey Apprenticeship Network (NJAN) initiatives, which comprises several successful grant programs.
“In the past five years, the Office of Apprenticeship has significantly increased the diversity of both apprenticeship programs and participants, and we’re looking forward to welcoming a new team member to drive this momentum even further,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “The Governor’s Fellow will help keep this time-tested model relevant to today’s workforce so we can develop a steady flow of talent for New Jersey’s most in-demand industries.”
Since Governor Murphy took office in January 2018, 577 new Registered Apprenticeship programs have been created in New Jersey – a 94 percent increase – and on-boarded 14,162 new apprentices. The state currently has 8,228 active apprentices serving in 1,188 programs. NJDOL grant-funded programs, particularly the Growing Apprenticeships in Non-Traditional Sectors (GAINS) program, have provided unprecedented opportunities for women and people of color, with more than two-thirds of GAINS grantees being women or minorities, twice the average among all apprenticeship programs in the state. Women account for 67 percent of GAINS apprentices, greater than seven times the statewide average of women apprentices when Governor Murphy was sworn in.
The Governor’s Fellow position at NJDOL is open to all eligible New Jersey residents and will be based on several qualifications, including effective communication and teamwork skills, established excellence in professional or academic achievement, proven leadership ability, and a demonstrated commitment to public policy. Applications must be received by the closing date of May 12, with interviews being held during the summer. The anticipated start date will be September 2023.
