Norcross Announces Nearly $13 Million for Affordable Housing in South Jersey
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced that South Jersey communities will receive $12,833,718 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide affordable housing and assistance services, improving security for residents and helping local economies thrive.
“Everyone deserves an affordable, safe place to call home,” said Congressman Donald Norcross. “These funds will go a long way to change lives and help transform neighborhoods in South Jersey and I’m proud to have supported this funding in my district. From combatting homelessness to assisting those who are ill, these investments will provide opportunities that may never have existed otherwise.”
The HUD grants include $4.4 for the City of Camden, $3.7 million for Camden County, $2.3 million for Burlington County and $2 million for Gloucester County. (All South Jersey recipients and specific grant programs are listed below.)
“The award of more than $4.5 million in federal grant funding is incredible news for Camden and our residents,” said Camden Mayor Frank Moran. “We commend Congressman Donald Norcross for his unwavering support and advocacy for our City. These monies will help bolster local CDBG, HOME and other grant related initiates within our community. This includes important City services like our first-time homebuyers program and housing assistance program.”
“These federal grants will impact the lives of our residents whether it is assisting the disabled or allocating funding to economic development projects these funds will enhance the quality of life of residents of Camden County,” Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli said. “Being able to utilize federal funding for our housing first initiative or to build a ramp for a wheel chair bound senior citizens we want to thank Congressman Norcross for fighting for South Jersey and bringing home this funding for the some of the most vulnerable residents in the county.”
“Community Development Block Grants provide tremendous benefits to Gloucester Township senior citizens, children and families. We are grateful to Congressman Donald Norcross for advocating for the residents of Gloucester Township,” said Gloucester Township Mayor David Mayer.
Five types of grants were awarded:
- Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), which provide funding for the development of viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.
- Emergency Solutions Grants, which provide funding to engage homeless individuals and families living on the street; improve the number, quality and operations of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families; provide essential services to shelter residents, rapidly re-house homeless individuals and families, and prevent families/individuals from becoming homeless.
- The HOME program grants, which help to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families.
- The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program grants, which provide housing assistance and related supportive services for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
- The Housing Trust Fund (HTF), which is a new affordable housing production program to increase and preserve the supply of decent, safe, and sanitary affordable housing for extremely low- and very low-income households, including homeless families.

- The City of Camden will receive $4.4 million:

- HOME Program, Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids – $925,922
- Camden County will receive $3.7 million:
- Community Development Block Grant – $2,378,081
- The HOME program – $1,116,674
- Emergency Solutions Grants – $194,143
- Burlington County will receive $2.3 million:
- Community Development Block Grant – $1,448,683
- The HOME program – $889,169
- Gloucester County will receive $2 million:
- Community Development Block Grant – $1,200,642
- The HOME program – $626,323
- Cherry Hill will receive a $438,205 Community Development Block Grant.
- Gloucester Township will receive a $289,364 Community Development Block Grant.
