Norcross on End of Trump Shutdown

“Republicans cannot govern without self-inflicted crises, short-term fixes and blaming Democrats”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) issued the below statement on his vote against the latest short-term Continuing Resolution:

“Republicans hold the House… the Senate… and the White House – and for the first time in our country’s history, they caused a government shutdown under single-party control. These Republicans cannot govern without self-inflicted crises, short-term fixes and blaming Democrats.

“We still do not have a long-term spending bill to address our defense and domestic needs because Republicans have placed their priorities elsewhere. They re-wrote the American tax code in a matter of weeks – it’s clear they can get things done when it benefits their billionaire backers. But when it comes to protecting vulnerable children and families, funding our military to keep our nation and neighborhoods safe, addressing the opioid epidemic, saving Americans’ endangered pensions and performing the basic duties of governing, Republicans continue to say no.

“I’m glad the Trump Shutdown is over – it did nothing to create jobs, raise wages or improve our economy. As we move on, I hope Republicans made their promises in good faith because, as always, I stand ready and willing to work with them on a long-term funding plan that moves our country forward.”

Norcross previously voted for three Continuing Resolutions to give Speaker Ryan and Republicans more time to work on a long-term budget.
