Oct 22: Press Conference to Protect Pinelands Commission at Statehouse
On Monday, October 22nd, the New Jersey Sierra Club will be joining other environmental groups at a press conference to address Governor Murphy’s lack of action regarding the Pinelands Commission. We will be calling on the Governor to fulfill his campaign pledge of depoliticizing the Pinelands Commission by making new appointments of those who will work to protect the Pines. Governor Christie stacked the Pinelands Commission with pro-development cronies so he could push through dangerous projects including pipelines. We need Murphy to replace those Commissioners with people who will do their job to protect the Pinelands the people who live there.

“Governor Murphy has had the ability to make significant changes to the Pinelands Commission for the past nine month yet has done nothing to protect the Pines. The first thing Murphy should have done was to remove Sean Earlen as Chair and replaced him with an environmentalist. He had the authority to do this on day one and he also has the ability to nominate seven Commissioners but has nominated none. Due to Murphy’s inaction, we still have a Commission that pushes through pipelines and votes again and again to sell out the Pines to development. This is an urgent situation and Murphy must act,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. “If Murphy really cares about protecting the Pinelands, he must make new appointments to the Commission immediately.”
