O’Scanlon Thrilled Sports Betting Signed

Says We Cannot Lose Focus

Senator Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) praised Governor Murphy for finally signing legislation regulation sports betting:

“This was the right choice for Monmouth Park, and for New Jersey. The equine industry is vital to our tourism and the preservation of thousands of acres of open space in New Jersey. It’s disappointing that we were unable to capture such a huge weekend for sports betting. However, hopefully this process will inform future efforts between the Governor’s Office and the Legislature so that together we can move things forward more efficiently when time is of the essence.

“I’m thrilled that it’s been signed, but we cannot lose focus. The permits need to be issued immediately. I’m looking forward to the Racing Commission and the Administration working together to make sure that this is done in time for betting to begin as quickly as possible. We do not want–and frankly, cannot afford–to lose another weekend. We need to be able to communicate with folks to assure them that they can come to Monmouth Park this weekend and make wagers.

“It appears the Racing Commission will be meeting Wednesday to adopt regulations allowing for a temporary waiver to licensed racetracks. We need to know right away what this process is and how it can be accomplished so we can hit the ground running for this weekend.”
