Pascrell Votes to Overturn Manufactured National Emergency
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-N.J.-09) issued a statement following passage of H.J. Res. 46, a measure to terminate Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency. Pascrell is a cosponsor of the resolution.
“There is no national emergency on the southern border. If there were, Republicans would have raised it when they held complete control of government. This is a crisis created out of thin air by Donald Trump to seed division. Congress is the Article I branch, the first and preeminent branch. For too long we have ceded our responsibilities to the imperial presidency to the detriment of our institution. I will not abdicate my office or my responsibility. The President, this one or any other, is not a monarch. It is our job to check executive overreach, and today we did just that.
“And on top of all that, Trump’s national emergency would imperil over $15 billion in military construction projects, including $51 million in New Jersey. So not only is Trump’s national emergency a constitutional nonstarter, it will also actually harm our security.”
