Passaic County, NJ – The Passaic County Board of County Commissioners has passed a resolution authorizing a shared services agreement between the County of Passaic and its municipalities for the use of County fueling stations. This expansion opens the door for every municipality in Passaic County to take advantage of fueling services at County facilities, strengthening collaboration while creating potential savings and efficiencies for local governments.

Passaic County has long partnered with municipalities on fueling services. The Borough of Prospect Park has utilized County fueling stations since at least 2012, and the Pompton Lakes Municipal Utilities Authority since 2017. Meanwhile, the Borough of Ringwood and the Township of West Milford have allowed the County to use their fueling stations since 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Under these agreements, fuel is generally provided at cost plus a 10% administrative fee, billed monthly. Because the County purchases fuel in bulk, fueling through these shared arrangements often results in cost savings compared to market prices at privately owned service stations. Even when the savings are modest, the agreements keep taxpayer dollars circulating within local government and streamline fueling for public fleets.

“This resolution is about making government more efficient and cost-effective,” said Commissioner John W. Bartlett. “By opening up our fueling stations to every municipality in Passaic County, we’re not just cutting red tape, we’re giving our towns and boroughs the opportunity to reduce costs, improve operations and strengthen the spirit of shared services that benefits all of our residents.”

The resolution also helps eliminate administrative hurdles. Previously, the County had to approve individual agreements with each municipality that expressed interest. Now, any municipality may opt in simply by passing its own authorizing resolution, allowing them to immediately benefit from the County’s fueling network.

This expansion builds on Passaic County’s ongoing commitment to shared services, a cornerstone of responsible government that reduces duplication, promotes collaboration, and delivers better value to taxpayers.
