Pou Disappointed in Veto of Outdoor Dining Bill
Trenton – Senator Nellie Pou, the sponsor of legislation, S-3128, that would have expanded opportunities for restaurants, bars, and breweries to survive the financial burdens of the COVID-caused economic crisis, issued the following statement expressing her disappointment in Governor Murphy’s veto of the bill:
“I am disappointed in the Governor’s veto of what I believe was a responsible proposal to help restaurants, bars and breweries that have experienced significant losses to expand their scope of services so they generate enough economic activity to survive this crisis. This is a pivotal time for community businesses that have endured months of financial hardship and need a lifeline to prevent bankruptcy.
“Our bill would have simply allowed restaurants to extend service areas to include covered and uncovered patios, decks, yards, walkways, and parking lots for both food and alcohol consumption. It would all require the approval of local zoning officials and would adhere to the rules of their liquor licenses. The extensions would be restrained, responsible and in the best interests of host communities.
“I will continue to work with the Governor and my legislative colleagues to find effective ways to address the needs of these businesses during these challenging times. It is important that we establish consistent standards that provide predictability. We have to try to do right by local businesses that are striving to maintain their place in their home communities.”
