Rik Mehta: We Need National Voter ID Laws to Restore Confidence in Our Elections

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chester, NJ- Republican Candidate for Congress in the 7th Congressional District, Rik Mehta issued the following statement calling for New Jersey and the Federal government to implement common sense voting reforms.

Specifically Mehta is calling for:
1.              A return to regular election day voting at local voting precincts.
2.              Requiring all voters to present driver’s licenses, non-driver ID cards or passports at the polls when voting in person and to include identification codes when voting by mail that can be verified.
3.              Ending automatic vote by mail registration and requiring voters to request an absentee ballot for each election if they decide they would like to vote by mail.
4.              New Jersey: End Governor Murphy’s unconstitutional emergency powers extensions that give him the ability to affect the election process unilaterally.
“Today I issued my plan for common sense voting reforms as a way to restore public confidence in voting here in New Jersey and across our nation. Governors using ‘public safety’ to unilaterally change the fundamental way states conduct elections to the benefit of themselves and their political party is unconstitutional and illegal. Voting is one of our most fundamental rights in America and safeguarding the process by requiring identification to vote and preventing overreaching Governors from interfering in that process is critical.” Stated Mehta. “A return to in-person election day voting is the first step to restoring confidence in our election system and ensuring fairness.”
Mehta ended with,  “Congressman Tom Malinowski likes to speak out of both sides of his mouth. He takes orders from Nancy Pelosi and the radicals in his party decrying voter protection laws and then cries about Russian interference when his candidate loses. Why would Tom be against protecting the sanctity of elections right here at home? It’s no wonder the good people of my District are moving to Florida. It’s time we put the people of New Jersey first and give them the respect they deserve.”
