Russo Statement on 3rd Ward Flooding Caused by Contractor Negligence

Hoboken, NJ – September 16, 2025 – Today, Dr. Michael Russo, Hoboken’s 3rd Ward Councilman, released the following statement regarding yesterday’s flooding in the Third Ward:

“Another water problem in Hoboken! At approximately 4:30pm yesterday, a contractor operating on private property struck a Veolia water line, causing significant flooding near the intersection of 7th and Madison Streets and subsequent closure of an entire city block. This comes on the heels of last week’s water main break, which caused a sinkhole to open up on Newark Avenue. Our residents’ minds are boggled and their concerns are completely valid; they deserve better than constant disruptions.

“As we know from previous incidents over the years, the City has the capacity to bring suit and/or levy significant fines against contractors who interfere with Hoboken’s water supply, and I urge Mayor Bhalla to expedite that process. I’m actively in touch with our neighbors, and anyone who has been affected by the damage should reach out to me immediately at (201) 401-9687.”
