Sarlo Statement on the New Jersey Catholic Dioceses Creation of Victim Compensation and Counseling Program

TRENTON – Senator Paul A. Sarlo (D-Bergen/Passaic) today issued the following statement in response to New Jersey Catholic dioceses creation of a victim compensation and counseling program for those who were abused by priests:

“I am glad that the Catholic dioceses in New Jersey are making attempts to repair the damages from decades of abuses by priests.  I found it intriguing that the dioceses will also allow for victims whose claims have exceeded the statutes of limitations to seek compensation and counseling.  Hopefully programs like this one will be able to start the long healing process among the Catholic communities in New Jersey.  That being said, I believe we should pause so that any legislation can be informed and shaped by the results of this program. I am hopeful that other organizations will follow the dioceses example and set up similar compensation programs for victims of abuse.”
