Senate Majority Leader Weinberg Announces Decision Not to Seek Reelection
Senator vows to fight to reform NJ Transit, enact harassment and sexual assault legislation, and increase government transparency in the year ahead
Trenton – Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg today announced that she will not be seeking reelection to the State Senate in Bergen County’s 37th District, which she has represented in the Legislature for the last 29 years.

“After months of deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to seek reelection to a fifth term in the Senate or a fourth decade representing my constituents in the 37th District and the people of New Jersey,” Senator Weinberg said. “It was not an easy decision because there is so much still to accomplish.

“I am committed to using my final year in the Senate to fight hard to achieve real reform at New Jersey Transit, to reform the handling of sexual assault cases, to combat harassment and misogyny in politics, to increase transparency and accountability in government and, of course, to speed-up construction of the new Port Authority Bus Terminal,” she said.

Senator Weinberg said she decided to make her decision public by mid-January in order to give political leaders in Bergen County ample time to decide whether to seek the Democratic nomination for her Senate seat, or other elected positions that might open up as a result of her decision.

“I will work just as hard for reform in my last year in the Legislature as I did in my first, and I will remain active in politics after I leave the Senate,” Senator Weinberg vowed. “I am not going away. I look forward to continuing to fight to expand opportunities for women in politics and government, and for social justice and equality in our society.

“I would like to thank my extraordinary family and friends for their support over these many years, the truly incredible advocates I have worked with on issues from marriage equality and pay equity to transit reform, and the dedicated women and men I have had the opportunity to serve with in the Assembly and the Senate over the past three decades,” she said.
