Sherrill Fights for 9/11 First Responders and Survivors
Co-Sponsors Bill to Make September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Permanent
Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill co-sponsored the Never Forget the Heroes: Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act which will make sure Congress keeps its promise to fund all eligible claims through the program set up in 2011 for first responders and survivors exposed to toxins as a result of the 9/11 attacks. The Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) faces 19,000 unpaid claims and has cut payouts by up to 70 percent for first responders and survivors as the fund runs out.
“Letting the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund close is not an option,” said Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. “Congress has the opportunity with this bill to show our united, enduring commitment to our September 11th first responders, survivors, and families. This speaks to the heart of who we are as Americans, and the need to help the men and women who still face the lasting consequences of September 11th. I am proud to join in this fight to get it done.”
The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund assists those who volunteered, lived, worked, went to school, or spent time in the affected areas between September 11, 2001, and May 30, 2002.
