Sires Applauds Gateway Project Provisions in New Infrastructure Bill

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) issued the following statement after the introduction of the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation (INVEST) Act:

“As a senior member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, I have worked for years to ensure that Congress provides New Jersey with the resources it needs to complete the Gateway Project. This project to repair and upgrade century-old infrastructure connecting New Jersey to New York and facilitating billions of dollars of commercial activity is arguably the most important infrastructure project in the nation.

“I am proud to say that the INVEST Act provides nearly $10 billion for a Projects of National and Regional Significance grant program, which the Gateway Project would easily qualify for; clarifies eligibility, and increases total funding, for rail infrastructure finance programs that can help fund the Gateway Project; and includes provisions to make the Gateway Project part of a broad nationwide climate resilience effort. These are billions of dollars which can be made available for the most important infrastructure project in the nation.

“In my years on the Committee I have worked hard to provide legislative solutions for the Gateway Project and our state, and I am proud that they are included in the INVEST Act. Beginning construction on the Gateway Project will create hundreds of jobs, ease transit on the East Coast, and ensure that our region remains one of the most economically productive for the nation.”
