SPACE & WIRTHS ON GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED BUDGET

SPACE & WIRTHS ON GOVERNOR’S PROPOSED BUDGET

Statement from Assemblymen Parker Space and Hal Wirths (both R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) on the Governor’s proposed Fiscal Year 2020 budget:

“Today Governor Murphy proposed a new budget which refuses to address the number one issue we face — high property taxes.

State school aid is directly correlated to New Jersey’s property tax burden.  The $2 million of aid reductions to the impacted school districts here in this current school year will increase to a $40 million loss annually under Murphy and the Democrats’ changes to the school funding formula.

Until school funding is fixed, rural and suburban districts will see their property taxes increase.  On the spending end, no new reforms to help school districts save money have been enacted.

That is why we saw school districts protesting outside the State House today and we stand with them against these draconian cuts.

Concerning the budget itself, the total spending plan Murphy proposed today is $38.6 billion, a $1.2 billion increase on top of last year’s budget – funded by new taxes on employers and law-abiding gun owners.

We will continue to speak out and vehemently oppose higher taxes and more spending.”
