Speaker Coughlin Statement on Employee Misclassification

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Middlesex) issued the following statement on employee misclassification and the protection of workers’ rights:

“Employers who misclassify their employees as independent contractors neglect to pay as much as 30% of payroll and related taxes, otherwise paid for by employees. This is unacceptable and harms our economy. Misclassification is an illegal process and I am proud to support further action to protect workers, taxpayers and employers who play by the rules. We must address this issue by taking action against this practice to ensure New Jersey’s economy will continue to grow and employees receive the wages they work hard towards obtaining.”
