Spearman, Chiaravalloti, Mukherji & Quijano on the Signing of A-4701:

This is a more concerted effort that can put additional food into pantries and onto dining tables in New Jersey homes for Families fighting hunger.”

Measure is One of Multiple Anti-Hunger Bills Sponsored by the Assembly

(TRENTON) – On legislation signed into law yesterday creating an online website to assist in coordinating surplus food donations among nonprofits, gleaners, and food retailers in the state, Assembly Democrats William Spearman, Nicholas Chiaravalloti, Raj Mukherji and Annette Quijano issued the following joint statement Tuesday:

“A part of ending hunger in the state requires rallying the community around the issue, expanding opportunities for organizations to communicate with each other and improving access to resources.”

“Compare the fact that roughly 40 percent of food grown in the United States goes unused to the reality of millions of Americans who are struggling to feed their families. Food waste is unethical; it’s an environmental issue and an economic problem that concerns us all because it inhibits us from helping families put food on their tables.”

“Giving nonprofit organizations, farmers and retailers a way to collaborate and distribute surplus food donations will help reduce food waste tremendously in the state. This is a more concerted effort that can put additional food into pantries and onto dining tables in New Jersey homes to help struggling families fighting hunger.”
