Governor Signs Sweeney, Van Drew, Gopal Bill Authorizing Sports Gaming

Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney, Senator Jeff Van Drew and Senator Vin Gopal, the authors of the Senate bill authorizing sports betting in New Jersey, issued the following statements today after  the legislation, S-2602/A-4111, was enacted into law by Governor Phil Murphy:

“We led the fight for sports betting and it is now happening. We overcame multiple legal obstacles and withstood the determined efforts of opponents with a decisive victory in the Supreme Court. We can now capitalize on the opportunities we worked for with a new sector of sports gaming that will help create jobs, generate economic activity and be an important boost to the state’s casinos and racetracks. We will see sports betting get up and running and we intend to see that New Jersey continues to be a leader with a sports gaming industry that thrives. Our efforts will pay off.” Senate President Steve Sweeney.

“Legalized sports betting will be a real boon for Atlantic City and the entire South Jersey region. It will bring new life to the casinos and racetracks by attracting more participants and creating new sources of revenue. The business that big sporting events will bring to Atlantic City will be enormous and the economic benefits can spread throughout the region and the state. It can help make the casinos and the racetracks destination attractions for a whole new segment of sports fans and it will extend the reach of participants through online gaming. Sports betting offers real and lasting opportunities now and into the future.” Senator Jeff Van Drew.

“Sports betting will be an enormous boost for the racetracks that will also bring more support to the breeders and the horse farms that have a long and storied history in New Jersey. They are an important part of the state’s economy, our quality of life and the state’s identity. New Jersey is horse country and the racetracks are a key part of that. We want it to continue and to thrive with a renewed source of revenue and a new source of activity. Sports gaming is a sure bet for New Jersey.”  Senator Vin Gopal.
