Sumter Applauds Governor Murphy on His First Executive Action Aiming to End Pay Discrimination & Close the Gender Wage Gap

(HOMETOWN) – Assembly Majority Conference Leader Shavonda E. Sumter joined fellow legislators as Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order addressing pay equity in the state:

“Today is a new beginning for New Jersey and a great start for Governor Murphy and his administration.

“Equal pay for equal work must be the single most important base point employers’ work from when determining salaries for their employees. This executive order turns back eight years of neglect of pay equity concerns in this state.

“After a decades long struggle to close the wage gap for women, we have just taken the first real step in New Jersey toward ensuring that a woman’s salary is no longer calculated on a sliding scale. The light of victory is breaking through a little more today than yesterday on achieving pay equity in this state.

“There’s more work in store for us on this issue over the next two years. Let’s stay focused on the difference this will make to New Jersey’s working mothers, New Jersey families and, especially,  our young women who just starting to build a career in their chosen profession. Women deserve to see an end to pay discrimination and to be seen as exactly who we are, equals in the workplace.”
