SWAIN & TULLY CONDEMN PORT AUTHORITY’S TRANSIT PRICE HIKES, DEMAND BETTER ACCOUNTABILITY TO TAXPAYERS & COMMUTERS

PARAMUS, NJ, Sep. 29^th, 2019: Assembly Members Lisa Swain and Chris Tully strongly object to a recently announced decision by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to increase tolls and rates for commuters, including for bridges, tunnels, airport travel, and multi-ride PATH cards.

Swain and Tully have issued the following statement:

“We strongly condemn the steep across-the-board hikes that will negatively impact hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents.

While we fully the support the goal of improving our transit infrastructure, forcing these types of rate hikes on drivers and PATH riders is the wrong approach. During our time in the Assembly, we have supported budgets committed to fixing the broken NJ Transit system that suffered through years of underfunding and neglect during the Christie administration.

An improved NJ Transit system will reduce the stress on the bridges and tunnels overseen by the Port Authority and provide better options for New Jersey commuters.

As legislators, we will be looking closely at the finances of all agencies involved in our mass transit system and will work to find more equitable and fiscally responsible solutions that don’t force hard-working New Jerseyans to foot the bill.”
