Sweeney Asks U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein to Rescind Wire Act Opinion
Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney sent the attached correspondence to United States Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein requesting the withdrawal of the Justice Department’s recent issued Opinion on the Wire Act. The Opinion could have a negative impact on sports betting at New Jersey’s casinos and racetracks, threatening the success enjoyed by the state’s casino industry, including the jobs and state revenue created from online gaming.
Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland) has asked former Senator Raymond Lesniak to officially respond to the Opinion, asking the Justice Department to reconsider its reversal of its prior Opinion of whether the Wire Act applies to non-sports gambling. Lesniak says he has submitted Freedom of Information Requests (FOIA) to determine who has lobbied the Justice Department to issue the new Wire Act Opinion.
