Sweeney Receives the Humanitarian of the Year Award at Community Access Unlimited Event

NEWARK – Senate President Steve Sweeney yesterday received the Humanitarian of the Year award at the Community Access Unlimited Award Gala Celebration.  The award is presented annually to a recipient that demonstrates humanitarian support for people with disabilities and who works to improve the lives of countless people, and who will continue to drive improvement in the future.

“Helping people with disabilities has been a passion of mine since my daughter was born,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Cumberland/Salem/Gloucester).  “I have made it a priority since I entered elected office to aid those with disabilities in any way I can.  The real heroes though are organizations like Community Access Unlimited who provide support for people with disabilities.  I want to honor all of you for your dedication and commitment to our collective goals.  This award is a shared award with all of you.”

“We work hard to empower all people with disabilities and enable them to live fulfilled lives,” said Community Access Unlimited Executive Director Sidney Blanchard.  “We are able to do so much because of people like Senate President Sweeney and other wonderful allies from many different communities, including the religious community, private businesses and elected officials from across the state.”

Community Access Unlimited is a statewide Elizabeth-based nonprofit providing support programs and services to adults with disabilities as well as youth served under the Department of Children and Families (DCF) to enable them to live independently in the community, in areas including housing, vocational and life-skills training, education, advocacy and recreation.
