Sweeney Speaks at Affordable Housing Ribbon-Cutting in Bridgeton

Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly rehabilitated Ivy Square affordable housing community in Bridgeton, which will provide much needed affordable housing for families in the surrounding area. So far, Bridgeton has 13 properties dedicated to affordable housing and further plans to both build new complexes and continue to rehabilitate existing developments.

“Over 150 affordable housing units will offer energy efficient apartments with expanded services – this is the gold standard for affordable housing in New Jersey,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). “The new housing opportunities address the real-life needs of working families in Bridgeton and will improve the quality of life for countless individuals in the years to come. I am deeply encouraged by the partnership between WinnCompanies and Gateway Community Action, and hope to see many more of these types of projects and partnerships around our state in the future.”

Formerly called Bridgeton Villas, the rehabilitated affordable housing development houses 156-apartment units with energy efficient rooms and expanded services, such as a fitness room and a community room. There are also units set aside for handicapped persons as well as homeless families and individuals.

“When we acquired this site in early 2017, we promised to maintain this housing’s affordability for at least three more decades and to significantly improve the quality of life for the families who live here,” said Brett Meringoff, Senior VP of WinnCompanies. “Today, we can say we have kept this promise, transforming the property into Ivy Square Apartments – high quality, modern apartment housing with a multitude of supportive services and a brand new community building. This once-neglected property is now a source of pride for residents and an asset to the community.”

Bridgeton has been working tirelessly to improve and expand access to affordable housing throughout the municipality. Tomorrow, another project will be breaking ground in Bridgeton, the River Grove affordable housing complex.
