(Verona, NJ) – Today Tamara Harris, the Democratic candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District issued the following statement in response to the passage of the Trump tax plan and Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen’s failure to stand up for North Jersey’s most vulnerable:
“It’s very troubling that career Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, has such little regard for his constituents that he has done nothing to protect Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid from the chopping block. It is really no surprise, given that to date he has voted 95% of the time to support the shortsighted and destructive Trump agenda.
The passage of this bill must be acknowledged for what it is: a betrayal of the people in our district. Make no mistake about it, this legislation will force the poor, the disabled, and seniors living on fixed incomes to foot the bill for this massive tax cut for the super rich. Their plans to slash the state and local tax deduction will literally tax New Jersey seniors and families right out of their homes. It just isn’t fair to them or working and middle class families who work hard, play by the rules, pay more, and get less in return. This is not good for our economy or our society.
The GOP provided Congressman Frelinghuysen the cover to vote “NO” on the final version, but the reality is that his words and his actions don’t align. House Speaker Paul Ryan made it abundantly clear that “entitlement cuts” will be next on their agenda, which means Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are in serious jeopardy. Rodney’s silence on the protection of seniors and families is deafening. I challenge Congressman Frelinghuysen to pledge he will not cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and will publicly lobby his GOP colleagues to do the same.
