Wimberly: Trump’s Haiti Comments Culturally Insensitive, Unbecoming of the Nation’s Leader

Assemblyman Says the Remarks Even More Despicable as We Approach

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday

(TRENTON) – Assembly Benjie E. Wimberly (D-Bergen, Passaic) issued the following statement Friday concerning President Trump’s alleged crude statement on Haiti and African nations:

“At this point in his presidency, we should not be completely shocked at the President’s lack of political appropriateness and professional behavior.

“He continually crosses the line when it pertains to the treatment of people with different racial or ethnic backgrounds.

“His comments yesterday were even more crude and despicable in light of the approaching celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday.

“This kind of demeaning culturally insensitive and politically inappropriate banter should never be accepted from any public official, experienced or inexperienced.

“Messages like this coming from the White House hit communities like Paterson hard, which has a prominent population of immigrants including Hatians.  It perpetuates the cycle of racism and intolerance in our nation and diminishes the hope of our citizens, those born here and those who choose to make a life here.

“I think now we can safely say that these are not just the antics of a reality show TV star but the real and very unfavorable principles showing of an individual who is leading this nation.”
